To coincide with National Brain Awareness Week 2021, the Neurological Alliance of Ireland has published its recent submission to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health on the impact of COVID-19 on access to neurological care.
The submission focuses on the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on access to services for people with neurological conditions and NAI's concern that existing services simply don't have the capacity to respond to pent-up demand once restrictions are eased and normal healthcare resumes.
The report highlights that neurological care services were already at crisis point before COVID19 due to decades of underinvestment and failure to implement existing policy.
The submission calls for urgent action to tackle critical under resourcing within neurological care services to ensure they can respond to need in a post-COVID-19 environment.
